Thomas P. Gross, MD

  • Tonight I bent over and put my socks on...PAIN FREE. I am 42 and the first doctor said I was too young for a hip replacement. TWO doctors later I landed in Dr Gross's office. He not only explained how my body likely got into this position but how he was going to fix it. Six months and 1 day ago, I had a hip surface replacement. Dr Gross is intelligent, matter-of-fact and a National authority in this field. His bedside manner is fabulous and his sense of humor appreciated. when and if I need to have my other hip done he will be the man to do it. I cannot say enough about this man and how my life today is so vastly different from 6 and a half months ago. Nancy and Crystal? (with the puzzle piece necklace) in his office are amazing...and the surgery center staff...I wish I could remember all of their names...because they were INCREDIBLE. This TEAM made a huge difference in the quality of MY life.

  • My father broke his hip and he was in terrible pain. He is 87 years old and not in great health. My father was seen by a couple of surgeons at the Providence NE Hospital.
I was concerned about my dad's health and his pain level.
Doctor Gross examined him and spoke to me about the surgery. Successful hip replacement was his goal but it might be difficult for my father health wise at his age. We spoke for a while and he asked me if I wanted my father to have the surgery. I said if he was willing to be my father's surgeon, I would like for him to do it. He put the biggest smile on his face and said, " thank you for your confidence."
Doctor Gross is patient, kind and a very talented surgeon. When he came to speak to me after the surgery he had that same smile and I knew I had chosen the best Orthopedic surgeon.
Not only was the surgery a success but my father is recovering well. He keeps asking me to thank Doctor Gross for giving him a new hip.

  • I'm a physician. My wife was in terrible pain, on narcotics, incapacitated and I found Dr. Gross. There were only 2 doctors in the country with more experience, and we could travel to SC by car, meaning no navigating airports and planes postop. Dr. Gross performed her hip resurfacing now 3 years ago. She is pain free. She roller skates, plays roller derby, mountain bikes and snowboards. Dr. Gross gave me my wife back. He recently did the same for my mother-in-law. He is a fantastic physician, great bedside manner and I adore him. I would take any negative reviews on here with a grain of salt. Perhaps a truckload. He is a caring physician who is among the best in the world at what he does. He has a pathway/regimen he doesn't deviate from, which is probably the root cause of some of the complaints.

  • Dr. Gross resurfaced my hip in 2012. For the year prior to that I was unable to walk without a debilitating limp and extreme pain. One month after surgery I was walking 2 miles a day. Six months later I was surfing every day like I did when I was a kid with NO pain or discomfort. 4 years later I still have no issues or pain. He and his staff were extremely pleasant and patient with my many questions. They've continued follow up to this day. The negative reviews below are misguided. This man changed my life.
Side note: 10 lbs of weight equals 30-50 lbs of pressure on your joints, depending on level of activity. Dropping extra weight is one of the most effective and least invasive ways you can reduce joint pain. Sometimes the truth hurts.

  • He does have God Syndrome, but who cares because he is great at what he does. The rest of his staff is top notch and don't forget you once you had the surgery. I email them with issues all the time and they get back to me the same day. You have to remember that Gross has done over 4,000 surgeries, so it is just no big deal to him. I would rather have someone with poor bedside manners that does a great job on my hip rather than someone that spends two hours with me and screws up operation.

  • I have to say that I was stunned when I read the 2 previous reviews. I have had difficulty with docs in the past for a variety of reasons, but I absolutely loved Dr. Gross. I had both hips resurfaced a year apart and have had fantastic results. I had some minor issues with the hospital billing, but my surgery and care by Dr. Gross, his team and the staff at the hospital was absolutely superior. Dr. Gross was the most down to earth surgeon I'd ever met and I work in Healthcare, so that says a lot. I would highly recommend his services.
